Sunflower Again Named One of America's Best

For a seventh year in a row, Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop has been named as one of America’s Best Bike Shops by the National Bicycle Dealer’s Association.

Of the approximately 4000 bike shops in the United States, fewer than 200 were honored with the title of “America’s Best” and of that number fewer than half have been on the list seven times. In total, four shops in Kansas were honored.

“To be included on the list again this year speaks volumes not only about the quality of the crew here, but also about the depth of the community that we’re honored to be part of here in Lawrence,” said Sunflower owner Dan Hughes.

Shops were asked to fill out a detailed application describing what sets them apart from the average retailer. Mystery shoppers then evaluated the business in more detail by visiting the store, reviewing their website, and contacting the shop by phone to assess the performance from a consumer’s perspective.

The program is designed to help consumers find great stores in their areas that will provide the expertise and professionalism they need to get the most benefit from cycling.

The recipients of the America’s Best Bike Shops title not only offer great shopping experiences and expert staff, but are also rated on their support for their communities, as well as support for bicycle advocacy both locally and nationally.

Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop, a locally owned and operated business, was established in 1972 to provide the surrounding community with high quality gear and clothing for outdoor adventures.  Located in the heart of Downtown Lawrence, Sunflower Outdoor & Bike Shop is staffed by enthusiasts seven days a week and can be reached at (785) 843-5000.

Choose Your Adventure

The mostly off-road course throughout the northeast region of Kansas was carefully designed to provide double the elevation per mile than many events in the region, giving this event a unique, punchy route. All distances include rolling gravel hills, a cyclocross course through the Snake Farm, water crossings, and a bit of single-track to surprise and delight all riders. You won’t be short on views (while you are short of breath) or variety.

There are three distances to choose from: Waffle (120ish miles); Wafer (75ish miles); and Wanna (40ish miles). The course will be released to registered riders the day before the event.

Finishers will receive:

  • Free State BWR Bad Ass Ale (trophy)

  • Finishers BWR Shirt

  • Waffles

  • Lunch

  • Beer

  • Bragging rights
